HP Laptop Charger and The Complete Buyer’s Guide 2026

March 24, 2026 /Posted byadmin / 412 / 0

The battery life of your HP laptop charger can be a concern if you notice a sudden power warning while working on your laptop. If your charger no longer works or is broken, there are many options available, which can make it confusing to pick the right one for your needs.

The battery life of your HP laptop charger can be a concern if you notice a sudden power warning while working on your laptop. If your charger no longer works or is broken, there are many options available, which can make it confusing to pick the right one for your needs.

What Is an HP Laptop Charger?

An HP laptop charger, also known as an HP laptop power adapter, is a charger, which is an item that converts regular AC mains power into low-voltage DC power for use by your laptop computer. If you didn’t have an HP charger, your HP laptop would not be able to work, as your HP laptop would simply be a really expensive paperweight.

However, not only do HP chargers provide electricity to your laptop, but they also regulate both voltage and current so that they do not harm your battery, and many newer HP chargers are designed to support HP fast charging, which can top up your battery significantly faster than older adapters.

Types of HP Laptop Chargers

There is a variety of HP chargers available on the market today. The one you need depends on your specific model of laptop and how you typically use it.

In modern HP laptops (Specter, Envy, or EliteBook), HP has a standard USB-C charger that enables you to charge your laptop using the same port that you might already use to charge your phone or tablet. HP USB-C chargers support USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and will often work with third-party USB-C chargers as well; however, using an HP-approved charger to ensure that it will work safely is always recommended.

Older HP laptops have a round barrel connector (this is sometimes referred to as a barrel pin charger). These types of connectors are not as versatile as a USB-C charging port but are still widely available on the market. If your laptop is several years old, then it is likely that you have a barrel connector for charging.

If you own an HP laptop that supports fast charging technology, you can purchase an HP Fast Charging Adapter to power your laptop’s battery to approximately 50% charge within 30 minutes. Using an HP Fast Charging Adapter is most practical for heavy users who frequently have limited charging time.

HP Laptop Charger Wattage Guide

HP charger wattage. Finding the proper charger is very important. If an HP laptop has been charged with an incorrect wattage (or too many watts), then it could result in the laptop not charging correctly or damage in very rare circumstances.

There are three types of HP chargers; weights of 45W, 65W, and 90W would break down as follows:

45W HP chargers are ideal for lightweight ultrabooks such as HP Stream and HP Pavilion x360. They are compact chargers that you can easily carry with you for travel.

65W HP chargers are the most common type of HP charger and are widely used for mainstream Core i3- Core i7 computers, such as HP Pavilion, HP Envy, and are great all arounds if you plan on using your computer every day.

90W HP Chargers are used for performance-based computers, and there is a good chance you would need this charger if you use demanding software or are a gamer on your HP Notebook or workstation.

As a general rule of thumb, having higher wattage than your laptop needs is safe due to the fact that your laptop will only draw from the charger what it requires and not what it can (from a higher wattage charger). If the charger you are using has lower wattage than your laptop requires to run, you may experience slow to no charging.

How to Choose the Right HP Laptop Charger

Picking the wrong charger is a common and frustrating mistake. Here’s what to check before buying:

Compatibility: Make sure that the charger you buy is a match for the specific HP laptop model that you have. Generally, you can find your model number on a sticker located at the bottom of the laptop.

Voltage & Amperage: Your current charger will have its output voltage (e.g., 19.5V) and amperage (e.g., 3.33A) printed on it. You’ll need to order a replacement charger that has the same voltage and amperage as your current charger.

Port Type: Don’t assume that your laptop will use a USB-C port or barrel pin connector. Check to see which type of connector your laptop uses before placing an order for a new charger, because it is surprisingly easy to order an incorrect connector type.

Original vs Compatible HP Chargers

When debating laptop accessories, one main factor that comes into play is whether to use an OEM charger or a compatible charger.

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) chargers are manufactured according to strict HP specifications. They will provide you with superior charging capabilities, will remain safe, and your HP warranty will not be invalidated. However, the downside is that the price for OEM chargers can be more expensive, from £30 to £70, while the cost of compatible/third-party replacements can typically range from £10 to £25.

It is important to remember that, with a compatible/third-party charger, you should always try to purchase a product from a reputable brand that has the appropriate safety certifications from CE and RoHS in order to ensure that you are buying a quality product.

Low-end fake products may be more likely to cause overheating and possible damage to your battery; therefore, if you choose to buy a compatible/third-party product, please make sure it has been tested and approved by an appropriate body and is not being sold for an abnormally low price.

HP Laptop Charger Price Guide with Laptopgiant(UK)

HP laptop charger

HP charger prices in the UK vary quite a bit depending on the type and where you shop: Laptopgiant

Charger Type Approximate UK Price
Original HP 65W Slim-Tip Charger £13 – £20
Original HP USB-C 65W Charger £14 – £25
Compatible HP 65W Slim-Tip Charger £14 – £24
Compatible HP Type-C Charger 65W £16 – £28

If budget is a concern, a mid-range compatible charger from a recognised brand on Amazon can be a reasonable choice, just check the reviews and safety certifications carefully.

Common Problems and Solutions

Charger Failure:

If your charger does not work, then please check if it is plugged into another wall outlet and check to see if there is any fraying on the cable. And check the charging port for debris or any bent pins. If it still does not charge, there is a good chance that your charger has failed.

Charging Too Slowly:

If your laptop charges too slowly, the problem could be that it is connected to a low-powered charger, the charger may be worn out, or you are using the laptop while it is very busy. Turn the laptop off and see if that will solve the issue.

Overheating:

If your charger is getting too hot, that could mean it is either a bad charger or it is an inferior product made by a non-manufacturer. If it gets too hot, you need to change it right away, because it could damage your laptop and could cause a fire.

Tips to Maintain Your HP Charger

You can extend the life of your HP laptop charger significantly by developing several quick and easy habits:

Do not wrap the charge cable too tightly around your adapter this causes stress at the cable connection.

When unplugging your charger, always use a firm grip on the plug. Do not pull on the cable when unplugging.

Keep your charger away from sources of heat and moisture.

When not in use, store your charger in a loose-cooled state (like a Loosely Wrapped).

Refrain from leaving your charger plugged into the wall and lying on the floor under a rug or sofa, as heat build-up may occur.

When looking to buy an HP laptop charger, consider the following:

Confirm your laptop model.

Check the power requirements for your laptop (i.e., either 45W, 65W, or 90W).

Check which port to connect to (either USB-C or barrel pin).

Decide whether you want to use an original HP charger or a trustworthy, similar product.

If you find that you can afford to buy an OEM HP laptop charger, you should — an OEM HP charger is specifically designed for your laptop and will provide the best long-term protection for your battery. HP laptop charger

However, a similar quality compatible charger with the required specifications and certifications can also provide reliable service, especially when used as a second charger.
